abstract = {This study presents experimental results from assessing fault orientation using triangulation and a combinatorial algorithm. We constructed two geological surfaces with vertical and inclined faults. These surfaces were documented by boreholes and represented by triangulated surfaces. We first calculated orientations for a small sample of triangles genetically related to faults that were also members of the Delaunay triangulation. To reduce the epistemic uncertainty regarding the true fault strike, we applied a combinatorial algorithm that allowed us to investigate the orientation distribution of all planes genetically related to the fault. The experiment revealed three unintuitive effects that require further studies: 1) greater concentration of observations about the true dip direction; 2) the same dip direction for different triangles; and 3) triangles that dip in the opposite direction to the fault. To conduct spatial clustering within surfaces, we suggest considering a broader interval of orientations related to faults. This broader interval serves to honor the observation that orientations can be genetically related to faults, even if they indicate a relatively high directional within-dissimilarity. We suggest statistical methods for circular data to investigate the resulting distributions. The computer code associated with this study is open source and freely available. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd},

abstract = {The western frame-margin of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin provides good case studies for structural evolution of the fold-and-thrust belt. This study is concerned with tectonic junctions taking place on the Late Variscan front of the Moravosilesian Fold Zone and coal basin. Clues of evolution of fold-and-thrust belt were reconstructed on the base of six cross-sections and using balancing procedure to calculate the shortening. These structural cross-sections illustrated the two principal positive and negative inversion processes of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The fold shortening varies in range of 25 up to 30% and in low range of 4 up to 18%. The thrust shortening is contrary to fold shortening and changed range of about 10% up to 50%. In the central part of fold-and-thrust belt summarised shortening is 55%, which gradually decreases northward up to 35% and southward up to 30%.},

abstract = {The paper presents the methodology of economic evaluation of coalbed methane exploitation in coal mines. The methodology consists of seven phases, which analyse: gassy conditions of coal deposit, coal exploitation scope, ventilation conditions of underground workings, productivity of degasification system as well as economics of both coal exploitation and methane recovery. In the result of the analyses classification, of methane resources and their subdivision into economic reserves and potentially economic resources can be done on the ground of either economic findings or methane content figures. The analyses also show, that methane extraction in always economic, but it can be proved only, if profit resulted coal exploitation during degasification is taken into account.},

abstract = {To improve the accuracy of estimations of methane emissions from coal mining, a study of the Polish mine-specific method of methane measurement has been undertaken. To carry out the study, the following assumptions have been made: (1) Methane emissions are proportional to the gas content of coals; (2) The single mine average gas content is a function of both exploitation depth and gas distribution; (3) The total volume of methane released during mining is in proportion to the total gas content, while the volume emitted from post-mining processes and from waste rock storage to the residual gas content. The study has shown that: (1) There are four sources of methane emission from coal mining: mining and post-mining processes, degassing systems and barren rocks storage; (2) Emission from degassing systems should be measured directly, while the emissions from the other sources could be estimated and characterized by release factors; (3) The release factors for mining processes are described by parabolic equations, which have been defined by comparing total measured emissions from venting and degasing systems with in-situ methane content. For the remaining emission sources the factors are equal either to the average residual gas content or to the total gas content, depending on the proportion of residual to the total gas content; (4) Release factors and emissions, calculated for Polish coal mining were found to be four times less than had been previously suggested.},

abstract = {Four stages of tectonic deformation D1-D4 were distinguished, leading to development of mesofolds and corresponding planar structures. Morphology and spatial orientation of individual generations of mesostructures prove gradual development of deformations in varying field of forces and increasing competence of deformed rocks. Amidst sedimentary structures there are only planes of primary stratification S0 that seem to have forced directions of further tectonic deformations. Outside bend zones of folds these planes usually agree with penetrative foliation S1. In the studied area two dislocations of regional significance were noted. The fault of Czerwony Potok (CzP) is of rotation type, whilst the fault of Wysoki Kamien (WK) is probably of throw type. The type and timing of these deformations is discussed. -from English summary},
