abstract = {Study Region: Southern Poland, Dunajec River catchment Study Focus: The study evaluated an eleven-year observation period of physicochemical parameters within a riverbank filtration (RBF) site located by the Dunajec River. A total of nine parameters (pH; electrical conductivity; sulphate; chloride; nitrate; manganese; water hardness; colour; turbidity) in both surface water and groundwater underwent statistical scrutiny. This analysis encompassed Spearman's correlation, linear mixed-effects models and hypothesis testing. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: This study revealed that the Dunajec River constitutes a major factor in forming the exploited groundwater physicochemical composition. Statistically significant differences between two rows of wells were found, implying a more substantial RBF impact on the row closer to the Dunajec. However, the river's influence on further wells was also highlighted. The RBF process in the study area was considered efficient since it maintained a stable groundwater physicochemical composition and provided sufficient water for exploitation over the years. Comprehending the interactions between the surface water and groundwater flow system is crucial to the well field sustainability, enabling water supply system optimisation and a more precise assessment of risks regarding groundwater contamination. © 2024 The Authors},

abstract = {The glacier environment exhibits a high sensitivity to global climate change, leading to progressive deglaciation and the exposure of previously ice-covered land. The newly exposed terrain provides a valuable opportunity to observe rapid ecosystem changes, such as the accumulation of glacial sediments, the development of soil-forming and progressive alterations in water and biogeochemical cycles. While developing hydrological and hydrogeological models for the Werenskioldbreen proglacial expanding zone, we encountered a significant problem due to insufficient data for parameterizing glacial sediments, which constitute the environment for water flow and storage. This study provides detailed insight into the physicochemical parameters of glacial sediments and classifies them in terms of grain size distribution, hydraulic conductivity, pH and the content of carbon (Corg), nitrogen (Nt) and phosphorus (Pt). We found that the marginal outwash plains of Werenskioldbreen are characterised by gravelly sand, sandy gravel and silty sand (28.6%; 23.8% and 19% of the total sample contents; respectively). The lateral moraine contains sandy clayey silt, silty sandy gravel or sandy gravelly silt (7.1%; 4.8% and 2.4 % of the total sample contents; respectively). The chemical parameters of young glaciofluvial sediments have lower values than those of moraines. Corg ranged from 0.07% to 2.70%. Nt was < 1.00 g kg−1 for 95% of the samples and < 0.5 g kg−1 for 81% of them. Pt was between 0.48 and 1.18 g kg−1. In line with the studies on this subject already published, we confirm that there is a clear relationship between the type of geomorphological form, its age, and the physicochemical parameters of glacial sediments. © 2024 Katarzyna Stachniak, Krzysztof Janik and Sławomir Sitek.},

abstract = {This comprehensive risk assessment, done for a MAR facility in Tarnów, southern Poland, covers two MAR techniques: infiltration ditches and induced bank filtration during the operation and planned potential expansion phases. Two methods were applied: the semi-quantitative risk assessment matrix and the probabilistic risk assessment – fault tree analysis (PRA-FTA), and their advantages and limitations analysed. Both methods examine a range of technical and non-technical risks that may pose a threat to the efficient functioning of the MAR facility in Tarnów, which supplies about 25% of the city's population with drinking water. It was found that 34 of the 65 risks analysed could pose a low to high risk for the Świerczków well field. The predominant risks potentially reducing MAR efficiency or leading to MAR failure are technical ones. According to the PRA-FTA method, if no preventive measures are taken, there is a 99.5 and 99.3% probability of the MAR system failing during the operational and expansion phases, respectively. The results indicate that the most serious risk is associated with the insufficient initial removal from the recharge river water of suspended solids, which clog infiltration ditches. The risks scored as medium relate to the threat of groundwater inflow from an extensive industrial zone, lying to the east of the well field, and to climate change negatively affecting the quantity of groundwater resources. This is the first example in Poland of a risk assessment for an existing MAR facility and its expansion, based on a broad spectrum of technical and non-technical risks present at the Świerczków well field, using two methods: the risk assessment matrix and PRA-FTA. This case study is a practical example of how to perform a risk analysis for a MAR site. It can make an important contribution to existing knowledge in this field and enrich the subject literature, a particularly relevant aspect given the widespread use of MAR techniques in Central Europe for the supply of drinking water to the public. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {The accelerated growth of water demand globally calls for promising solutions in the field of water management. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems are among the solutions that are capable of increasing water supply and improving water quality through natural attenuation processes. Along with hydrogeologic considerations and institutional feasibility assessments, economic analysis is essential when evaluating MAR projects. This study is the first one to provide an economic feasibility assessment of a MAR scheme in Poland by performing a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) combined with a contingent valuation study to identify the willingness-to-pay, sensitivity analysis to address uncertainty regarding the realisation of benefits and costs together with expert assessment of socio-economic risks associated with the MAR scheme implementation. The results suggest that the total economic value of the MAR scheme’s extension (which includes both use and non-use benefits) exceeds the costs of putting this system in place and maintaining it. This paper can contribute to the existing literature as a practical example providing the base for economic assessment and policy considerations of future sustainable water management projects. © 2022, The Author(s).},
