abstract = {This chapter explores the spatial, economic, and symbolic aspects of the legacy of the New Tychy project, the second Polish socialist city after Nowa Huta. The critical issues raised in the chapter include the concept of ‘path dependence’. Apart from other cities in post-socialist countries, Tychy has managed to avoid such a path of transformation. The chapter emphasises the main elements of the town’s transformation that make Tychy stand out from other new socialist cities of Central and Eastern Europe: significant change of its primary function – from a dormitory town for the employees of the nearby mines to a major centre of regional and national industrial, with investments made by global corporations. An example of successful social and economic transformation, the city is now one of the richest municipalities in Poland. Apart from dealing with the main results of post-socialist socio-economic and demographic development, the chapter shows the specifics of architectural heritage and its social assessments, including the creation of a city tourist route entitled ‘From socialist realism to postmodernism’. Seventy years after New Tychy’s foundation, a generalised picture is also presented of the planned socialist city, underlining its complex functions as a place to live and work, and for leisure. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Valentin Mihaylov and Mikhail Ilchenko; individual chapters, the contributors.},

Indication of the consequences of division, especially in the context of cross-border connections, allowed to carry out periodisation of socio-cultural and economic links of the towns of Cieszyn and Český Tĕšín with their surroundings. Attention is drawn to the historical variability of the ethno-national and religious structure of this area. While until the early twentieth century we can speak of a large diversity of ethnic and religious structure of the town, the introduction of the state border in 1920 and the Second World War caused a clear difference in this respect on both the Polish and Czech side. © 2020, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.},

abstract = {The problem of depopulation in towns is present in most European countries. In Central and Eastern Europe it emerged primarily after the political transformation at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the often-significant demographic decline, the problem did not immediately become part of agenda-setting in towns’ local strategies. This paper discusses the above topics, focusing on the principal reasons for trivialization of depopulation in local policies of towns in the Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. In the discussion an emphasis is placed on the fact that in this region the issue of depopulation and urban shrinkage ‘vied’ with another consequence of transformation: unemployment. Because the Silesian Voivodeship is one of the largest regional labour markets in Europe, the confrontation of the two phenomena in local and regional policy took an original course characterized by phenomena such as policy taboo, trivialization, informal agenda-setting and mismatch strategies. The paper shows that while all the mentioned attributes of urban policy with respect to depopulation may be regarded as negative, considering the gigantic scale of the unemployment and depopulation phenomena and lack of experience in urban governance, they were a ‘natural’ reaction of the local authorities to the accumulated problems. It also indicates that in the studied region issues such as strongly marked morphological polycentricity and its (post)mining and (post)industrial nature were also not without significance. © 2020 The Author(s). abstract = {Each individual or human collective determines their place in the world taking into account geospatial units of different nature (administrative-territorial; ethno-territorial; geopolitical; civilisational; etc.) and on the various geographical scales (local; regional; national; subnational; and global). In the scientific research on the relations between individuals and social groups with geographical space, attention is paid to comprehension of the connections between human consciousness, perception and identification. The authors attempt to conceptualize this issue, emphasizing differences in the interpretation of identity in a spatial context. Significant nuances, at the individual and socio-territorial level, in discrepancies between consciousness, identification, identity and power are underlined. At the supranational level, three possible variants of relations are discussed. The first refers to the construction of a regional association based on the geographical proximity of participating subjects. It has pluralistic nature. In such cases, as European Union, preservation of national identity and cultural traditions are highlighted. In the second case, ethno-territorial groups realize their common identity (as Balkan people and countries), but they do not aspire to deepen cooperation and regional integration. It is possible to distinguish the third type - a supra-national community, projected and proclaimed by one force with post-imperial ambitions. This is the case of Turkish Neo-Ottomanism. In addition to theoretical conceptualization of the above mentioned issues, relevant examples from the post-socialist states of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe are discussed. The practical significance of territorial identity in its spatial aspect, including relations of ethnic and national identity with the territory, is also stressed. © 2019 Russian Academy of Sciences. abstract = {Many towns and cities in the world experience the process of urban shrinkage. This may be observed in localities of different types and of all sizes, including a large group of post-industrial towns and cities of Central and Eastern Europe. One of the districts affected by the urban shrinkage process is the Katowice conurbation in Poland, which may serve as a good example to consider the potential for introducing the idea of sustainable development. In this perspective, sustainability is considered as a specific challenge within the progress of regional transformation, but also a target concept for a large urban region to be followed throughout the evolution and at particular stages of the change. In the discussed region it is all the more important because it is followed by phenomena related to post(industrialism), relatively high pollution levels compared with the European average and a polycentric system of settlement. This paper states that the current urban policy implemented in the Katowice conurbation does not seem to have any palpable effect reversing the trend of depopulation in the region, which seems to stem from the fact that numerous initiatives undertaken in the area are 'illusory' and often unnecessary and unjustified. This also applies to activities embracing and fostering the idea of sustainability. With regard to the latter issue, the main concern refers to overinvestment and wasting the measures to reduce low emissions and to make savings in the heat supply system for residential buildings. The Authors proposed a new vision for the transformation of the region. It will respond to the current and expected needs of the residents, while making allowances for multidimensional sustainable development, particularly in terms of housing policy and spatial development. This concept primarily focuses on a new balance between the areas covered by low-rise and high-rise buildings and the reorganisation of the structure of the local economy. © 2018 by the authors.},

abstract = {Terminology, that helps to organise research issues, is a significant component of each scientific discipline. In socio-economic geography, such expressions include concepts of a region, a city, or a social space. They are not disjunctive ideas - for example, we find a concept of an urban region where a social space can refer to a city, or a region, and at the same time regional, urban and social research can investigate these same areas. Concepts may also illustrate a specific model of an explanation in science, a particular stage of methodological development of the discipline, or a vision of the world. Bearing in mind the complexity of methodological issues, which is only briefly mentioned here, as well as a multiplicity of definitions of terminological concepts (region; city; social space), the author's intention was to compare the premises of occurrence of the concepts and their consequences for the development of socio-economic geography. The increases in complexity of socio-economic changes as an effect of the overlapping processes of social modernization, restructuring of economic space, and suburbanization were itemised. The main research tool in this case is the deductive reasoning procedure leading to the generalization of the output of regional and urban research, as well as existing analyses of social space. The rationale for investigating the problem arose from the significance of the above-mentioned research, both the ones carried out during the previous stages of development of socio-economic geography as well as contemporary research trends. The crucial aspect here is the increase in complexity of these processes, and the spatial and functional structures leading to the transition from simple post-modernity to a risk society. Therefore, application of regional, urban and social research is also important, especially in the context of the process of depopulation, and "shrinkage" of cities and regions. It affects the possibilities of creating urban or regional policy. The rationale for investigating the problem also results from periodic necessity to synthesize the research on basic terminological issues, especially in the periods when changes of socio-economic and spatial conditions occur, and affect transformation of the existing set of the basic concepts. © 2018 Copyright by University of Silesia in Katowice.},

abstract = {The aim of the article is to indicate the main reclamation paths of the post-mining areas in environmental and economic aspects. The phenomena have been discussed with the example of the city of Sosnowiec, where these actions are of exemplary nature in reference to Poland. The article presents two main paths of activity, including environmental and economic directions. The first is applied in the situation of a lack of possibilities to utilize the post-mining areas for economic or other social activities. It comprises the establishment of areas designed for the development of new industries, services, logistics, or housing areas. The environmental path is connected with the change in the function of the space. Due to partial human interference or natural plant succession, new areas with significant nature and landscape value are being shaped. Both directions play equivalent roles in municipal politics.},

abstract = {This paper attempts to determine and describe suburbanization stages (especially in the context of political-economic transformations and population changes) and also, to verify classical models of urbanization stages as a system of concentric zones, basing on historical process of development of complex settlement systems of Katowice voivodship (according to the former administrative division), i.e., Katowice conurbation, Rybnik agglomeration, Bielsko-Biała agglomeration, and Częstochowa agglomeration. The analysis includes the population number and the balance of migration between 1975 and 2008, as well as the number of entities of national economy between 1995 and 2008. Every settlement system was divided into its core, such as the main city or a group of cities, and its surrounding area, comprising urban and rural municipalities directly neighbouring the core. The calculations included absolute single-base increments and chain increments. The analysis showed that the historical processes of urbanization of the Śląskie voivodship reveal significant variations in the way they were shaped in comparison with model-based approaches included in the literature of the subject matter. The agglomeration of Częstochowa is the closest to the concentric model, consisting of urbanization, suburbanization and deurbanization, whereas the remaining settlement systems reveal bigger or smaller differences. Variations between analyzed settlement systems reveal themselves also in contemporary times. The rate of population growth and migration balances divide the systems into different stages of maturity of suburbanization. The earliest were discovered in the Katowice conurbation. As much as the rate of population changes and migration balances significantly differentiated the core areas in comparison with their surroundings, the differences were less obvious in the aspect of business growth rate. This results from the fact that the core areas still retain the majority of workplaces. An increase of business activity around the surrounding areas remains selective, both as to the kind and space, revealing somehow higher rate as far as the agglomeration of Bielsko-Biała is concerned.},

abstract = {Taking into consideration all conceptions of economic and social development discussed here it should be concluded that - non of the classical models of social transformation is represented in the Katowice region in homogeneous form. In fact, only modernisation (as it is a historical aspect) is most distinguished among others; - it is possible that features typical for several models of economic or social transformations occur at the same time. This concerns spatial approaches. The consequence of frequent fragmentation of social-economic reality in numerous theoretical conceptions and proposals of restructuring changes is a narrow understanding of the research problems. It seems, therefore, that conceptions of social development created on the basis of sociology may be successfully applied in social geography. The condition here is not only taking into account spatial aspects but also the possibility of applying several models of transformations at the same time.},

An attempt was made to compare changes observed in Katowice region with basic conceptions of social development, i.e. modernism, dependent development, endogenic development, and Wallerstein's world system. Non of these conceptions occurred in the area studied in a homogeneous form. Moreover, it is possible, that features typical for several social models may occur in the same time, both in structural and spatial frame.},

abstract = {The paper concerns the evaluation of determinants and identification of trends of social-economic transformations in Katowice region. This is the most urbanised area in Poland. In the conditions of central economy based on intensive industrialisation it was created into a traditional industrial region with abundance of jobs. In terms of demographic transformations, considerable migration inflow was observed here until the 1980s, which was influenced by economic investments and resulted also from the phasic character of demographic cycle. The beginning of political-economic transformations at the beginning of the 1990s revealed weaknesses of the hitherto model of extensive development of this area, which is evidenced by such phenomena as collapse of many industrial plants, old-fashioned branch structure of industry with domination of mining and metallurgy, which requires profound restructuring. All these result in large structural unemployment, which will still increase in the feature. This, in turn, causes the increase of disproportions in the conditions and life-style of the region inhabitants. The barrier of restructuring is inefficient amount of financial measures and the territorial scale of the region, therefore the realisation of restructuring programme requires financial support from structural funds of the European Union.},

abstract = {The course and nature of demographic and social changes in the Katowice district (voivodship) after 1921 may be summarised in the following way: 1. In the years 1921 - 1950 the degree of integration within the district was limited and demographic and social situation unstable. Also, the commencement of some trends to be observed later, after 1950, may be identified, such as general spatial distribution of population or dynamics of population change. 2. Analysis of models of demographic change in the district after 1950, based on the results of demographic and social research carried out so far, shows the presence of four characteristic spatial patterns. In 1950-1974 the intensity of demographic phenomena was decreasing northward and southward of the Upper Silesian Industrial Area (GOP) and the respective zones had an almost east-west extension (Fig. 4a). Later on, in 1975-1980, distinct sectors in the spatial pattern of social and demographic phenomena could have been observed (Fig. 4b). However, if the entire time span after 1975 is considered, two boundaries of internal differentiation can be recognised in the region, related to demographic characteristics and to urbanisation and industrialisation, respectively (Fig. 4c). According to the demographic prognosis of the district until 2020, the existence of individual small areas of relatively high indexes of population development is expected. They will be preferentially located in the northern and southern border areas within the region (Fig. 4d). Altogether, a significant growth of uniformity of demographic change is foreseen. They will show up as increasing trends of demographic regression or stability, particularly as far as cities are concerned. 3. The changes were consequent upon natural demographic phenomena (demographic cycle) and external influences such as migrations. The latter were most pronounced in periods of major regional development (opening of coal mines in the ROW industrial area, building of Katowice steel work, car-building plants). 4. Major impact of the above development has been the enhancement of demographic and social differences between towns where the development was taking place, and the remaining ones. They include an increase in demographic potential and rejuvenation of age structures of local communities. 5. Spatial pattern of regional demographic and social differences was only marginally considered when consecutive reforms of administrative subdivision of the district were introduced. Political and economical factors were of prime importance. 6. Post-war interference of regional authorities with the course of demographic processes has been limited and in fact restricted to the elaboration of the plan of degglomeration of GOP in the fifties. Except the impact of industrial development in the seventies, they have not changed social and demographic nature of the region to any appreciable extent.},

The first is diminution of [the] influence of demographic influences which originate outside the voivodship, the second is a stabilisation (regress in some cases) of some urban centres. The latter is due to a nation-wide demographic transformation as well as to a growth in emigration from traditional urban centres of Katowice conurbation....[The] latest [official] surveys indicate that the named trends are characteristic for a majority of Polish cities over 100,000 since 1990." abstract = {The aim of the paper is to compare the attributes of spatial-functional structure of Katowice Voivodship in Poland and Ostrava-Karvina industrial region in Czech Republic as the representatives of traditional socio-economic regions in Europe. Practically only Polish-Czech border separates the mentioned areas as they are situated in direct neighbourhood and have similar origin in addition. Katowice voivodship covers 6650 km 2 and is inhabited by 3.993 thousand persons while in Northern Moravia these numbers are: 11 067 km 2 and 961 thousand persons. Twice larger concentration of inhabitants in Ostrava (327,5 thousand) which makes 16.7% of total population of the region in comparison with other localities indicates the agglomeration character whereas Katowice voivodship is characterized by con-urban settlement network with the largest centre in Katowice (366,8 thousand inhabitants - 9.2% of total region's population) and smaller centres: Sosnowiec (250.4 thousand), Bytom (229.6), Gliwice (214.5), Zabrze (204.0 thousand inhabitants). The analysed areas are functionally similar due to domination of industry in each of them. Industrialization processes based on the coal mining have started at the end of the 18th century in Katowice voivodship and in the thirties of the 19th century in Ostrave-Karvina region. Although in the 19th century the economic structures of both areas expanded by industries: chemical, power, machine building, textile, food, nevertheless the mining and metallurgy still dominated. Socio-economic transformations after 1945 in Katowice voivodship and Ostrava-Karvina region have been based on preferences for mining and heavy industries and on simultaneous expansion and modernization of branch structure.},

abstract = {Analyses the interdependence between population dynamics and employment in Poland against the background of changes in the structure of employment as well as total population growth in 1975-1985. Use was made of the ORLINE taxonomic method, J.W. Webb's structural diagram and the method of standardised residuals from linear regression. The results indicate a considerable spatial differentiation of the interdependence under study. By applying the method of standardised residuals from linear regression to the investigation of the mutual proportions as well as the dynamics of employment and population it was possible to distinguish 6 types of interdependence between those features, identifying them in terms of industrialisation and urbanisation. In general, a slackening of industrialisation processes can be noted in favour of demographic urbanisation. -from English summary},

abstract = {The establishment of the Katowice Steelworks in 1976 in Dabrowa Gornicza involved a series of changes in the spatial and functional structure of this town and its surrounding area. Among the nearly twenty thousand workers assigned by their parent firms or arriving individually to build the steelworks in 1972-1976 there were many who settled permanently in Dabrowa Gornicza or its vicinity. The result was an increase of the number of employees and consequently, an increase of the number of marriages and so a natural growth of population. Since 1975 natural population growth has played a much greater role in the increase of population in Dabrowa Gornicza than migration. An additional, but equally important element accelerating demographic-social changes was the incorporation of the surrounding areas, which took place particularly in the seventies. Dabrowa Gornicza had thus become an example of an urban centre with intensively developing forms of spatial, economic, demographic and social urbanization, which checked the process of ageing of the population, having been observed until 1973. -from English summary},

abstract = {The study shows the characteristics of the socio-economic structure of the Katowice voivodship by means of selected quantitative methods (methods of main components, McQuitty's elementary link analysis, discriminatory analysis). Two distinct sets of units obtained in this way form two socio-economic regions: central and south-western ones. The central region is also differentiated into the western part characterized by considerable similarity of towns with regard to the analysed features and the central-eastern part marked by lesser similarity to towns. Towns of the Dabrowskie Coal Basin form a part of the central region. The study points to a clear western border of the central and south-western regions and to its rather undefined, more zonal than linear course in the eastern and south-eastern part of the Katowice voivodship. -English summary},
