abstract = {Spatiotemporal modelling of infectious diseases such as coro¬navirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) involves using a variety of epi-demiological metrics such as regional proportion of cases and/or regional positivity rates. Although observing changes of these indices over time is critical to estimate the regional disease bur¬den, the dynamical properties of these measures, as well as cross-relationships, are usually not systematically given or explained. Here we provide a spatiotemporal framework composed of six commonly used and newly constructed epidemiological metrics and conduct a case study evaluation. We introduce a refined risk estimate that is biased neither by variation in population size nor by the spatial heterogeneity of testing. In particular, the proposed methodology would be useful for unbiased identification of time periods with elevated COVID-19 risk without sensitivity to spatial heterogeneity of neither population nor testing coverage. We offer a case study in Poland that shows improvement over the bias of currently used methods. Our results also provide insights regard¬ing regional prioritisation of testing and the consequences of potential synchronisation of epidemics between regions. The approach should apply to other infectious diseases and other geo¬graphical areas. © The Author(s), 2022 Licensee PAGEPress, Italy.},

abstract = {An introductory text discusses the Just Transition Fund’s core assumptions and origin, in the process revealing stages to the evolution of the approach taken – in the direction of ‘green economy’ assumptions. Activities financed within the framework of the Fund are identified, in respect of the restructuring of Poland’s mining regions. Examples of fields of intervention are then discussed by reference to the Terytorialny Plan Sprawiedliwej Transformacji Województwa Śląskiego 2030, i.e. the 2030 Territorial Plan for the Just Transition of Poland’s Śląskie Voivodeship, in Silesia. A particularly important aspect here is the timetable for closures of mines and conventional power plants. The material also presents selected data on the significance of mining and the extractive industries in both their social and economic dimensions. Particular attention is here paid to the labour-market consequences of the Just Transition. The references are to levels of pay in the sector referred to, as well as the wealth characterising the relevant Polish gminas (areas of local-governmental administration) – as an alternative way of looking at the entire process. The article also points to a large number of research aspects linking up with transitioning in the economy and requiring further study and analysis. Overall, the work points to the challenges that regions subject to restructuring are going to be faced with. © 2022, Insitute of Geography and Spatial Organization Polish Academy of Sciences. abstract = {Increased geopolitical competition and growing economic nationalism after 2014 have gradually started to slow the trend of liberalization of international trade. Relations among certain national states have turned into trade wars - a hybrid phenomenon shaped at the intersection of geopolitics and geoeconomics. The paper explores global and regional trends in trade regulations introduced by the world's largest economies and, at the same time, its major military powers. The G20 countries' role in these processes was illustrated through references to empirical data on the dynamics of the introduced trade regulations in 2009-2018. The effectiveness of the regulations index is proposed. Apart from the harm that deepening such negative trends in the global geostrategic balance does to broader bilateral relations, the role of trade wars in re-shaping globalization's established conditions is also discussed. © 2021 Sciendo. abstract = {Brownfields are remnants of the functional and spatial transformations of urban areas in Poland. They are particularly abundant in old industrial districts, based on coal mining and metallurgy. The aim of this study is to identify the transformation directions and functional changes of brownfields in the former Upper Silesian Industrial Region in southern Poland, which has evolved into the Górnoslasko-Zagłebiowska Metropolis (GZM) through the process of socio-economic transformation. The study makes use of the test of independence and Cramer’s V as a post-test, and the method of in-depth interviews. The results indicate that the most popular new functions of post-industrial sites are production and services. When we consider large brownfields such as, in particular, disused mine dumps, dumping sites, settling ponds and workings, the most popular new form of land use is green spaces. Moreover, the study shows that the size of brownfields impacts their new forms of land use. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.},

abstract = {Regional identity is a significant element of contemporary scientific discourse. It is justified in the era of progressing globalisation, which, by unifying traditional cultural patterns, forces regional communities to redefine their traditional values. Today, the Silesian identity is subject to such transformations. The distinctiveness thereof was shaped by many political, social and economic factors. Contemporarily, globalisation is a factor in socio-cultural transformations. The essence of the study of Silesian identity in the face of globalisation is to indicate the most important changes thereof reflected in the perception of the inhabitants of Katowice. The research goal is to analyse changes in the perception of globalisation and modern attitudes towards Silesian values (work and family). © 2020 Radosław Sagan et al., published by Sciendo 2020.},

abstract = {The article presents, in a multifaceted manner, the changes that occurred in urban electric transport in Ukraine after 1991. The purpose of the article is to research the diversification of the degree and directions of development and transformation of urban electric transport systems in the context of the transport policy. The legal and financial conditions for the functioning and development of the system are discussed, and a SWOT analysis of the current situation is carried out. In order to assess the direction of the changes occurring on individual networks, a synthetic index was used, constructed on the basis of the statistical data from 25 years available. The research has shown that in 1991-2016, in the vast majority of Ukrainian cities there was a regression in urban electric transport, the largest in the east of Ukraine. That was of a bipartite nature: in the first years it practically applied to all networks, later a polarization in cities occurred in parts of cities the situation of urban electric transport has improved slightly. In the context of numerous diagnosed problems, the challenges faced by urban electric transport in Ukraine were indicated. © 2019 Ivan Rudakevych et al., published by Sciendo.},

abstract = {The taphonomy of three Middle Triassic (Muschelkalk) monospecific ophiuroid taphocoenoses, comprising Aspiduriella similis (Eck), from different regions in Poland (Holy Cross Mountains; Upper Silesia and North-Sudetic Basin) has been investigated. The majority of specimens (88.5% of a total of 428 individuals) are partially disarticulated, having only proximal and median portions of their arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 2). Pristine specimens, with only faint traces of disarticulation (Taphonomic Group 1), as well as those that preserve the disc only, or which have only proximal stumps of arms preserved (Taphonomic Group 3), are much rarer (6.5% and 5%; respectively). Moreover, most specimens (76.4%) are oral side up. Only 19.2% of specimens are preserved in life position, and a small fraction (4.4%) are preserved oblique to bedding. All ophiuroids studied occur in thin, pelitic layers devoid of any trace fossils. Associated body fossils, such as bivalves, gastropods or crinoids, are very rare. Taking into account ophiuroid taphonomy, as well as sedimentological characteristics of the thin layer (burial layer), it is clear that all assemblages were transported prior to burial. The predominance of articulated skeletons indicates that the burial event (obrution event) was not only rapid, but also single -subsequent events would have destroyed the previously buried ophiuroids. Storm-related resuspension of fine-grained material from nearshore environments which covered the ophiuroids is the most likely burial agent. The fact that in all regions the ophiuroid taphofacies studied is identical suggests that the three assemblages underwent the same burial history, and that a single event might have been responsible. © 2007 The Author, Journal compilation © 2007 The Lethaia Foundation.},
