abstract = {The digitisation of the entomology resources of the Department of Zoology, University of Silesia DZUS (presently the Zoology Research Group; Katowice; Poland) allow presenting a substantial collection of aphids, adelgids and phylloxerids (Hemiptera: Aphidomorpha). The collection preserves more than 12 500 curated specimens stored as over 9 500 slides representing 683 taxa (645 identified to the species level and 38 identified only to the genus level), 160 genera, three families and 15 subfamilies. Thirty species represent type material. The geographical analysis of the Aphidomorpha collected shows mainly Eurasian areas, with particularly good representation from Central Europe (especially Poland). The highest diversity is represented by species of Aphididae (98.6%), with the richest in samples subfamily Aphidinae (65.2%). Four hundred twelve genera (972 taxa) of host plants from 99 families were identified among the slide-mounted specimens. A new name-Aphis (Aphis) jaroslavholmani nom. nov. is proposed for Aphis (Aphis) holmani Kanturski & Bezděk, 2019. Copyright © 2022 Magnolia Press.},

abstract = {Information about the scientific collections is made available more and more often. The digitisation of such resources allows us to verify their value and share these records with other scientists – and they are usually rich in taxa and unique in the world. Moreover, such information significantly enriches local and global knowledge about biodiversity. The digitisation of the resources of the Zoology Research Group, University of Silesia in Katowice (Poland) allowed presenting a substantial collection of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha). The collection counts 9369 slide-mounted specimens, about 200 alcohol-preserved samples, close to 2500 dry specimens stored in glass vials and 1319 amber inclusions representing 343 taxa (289 identified to species level), 158 genera and 36 families (29 extant and seven extinct). A significant part is the collection of an outstanding Polish coccidologist, Professor Jan Koteja. The geographical analysis of the scale insects collected shows mainly Eurasian areas, but there is also material from North America, South America, as well as Africa and New Zealand. ©ZFMK},

abstract = {The Arctic aphids live briefly and must breed quickly to survive. Shortened life cycle, with only two generations: the stem mother and sexuales - oviparous females and males is an adaptation for optimal use of the short breeding period, which lasts from late July to the end of August. Using Acyrthosiphon svalbardicum, an endemic High Arctic aphid species, we describe the structure of the reproductive system of sexual morphs and compare with its temperate counterparts, in particular the model organism the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. Generally, the histological composition and ultrastructure of reproductive system of sexuales of A. svalbardicum is broadly similar to the reproductive systems described already in other species of aphids. The unique characters include in both oviparous females and males an enormous layer of the fat body, adhering to the structures of the internal reproductive system. The greatly enlarged accessory glands of males accumulate a heterogenous secretion composed of irregularly organized bunches of spicule-like structures of high electron density embedded in fine and coarse granular material. This material, unknown among temperate counterparts of A. svalbardicum, during mating is transported from the accessory glands of the male to its ejaculatory duct, where it is mixed with the ejaculate, and then is transferred to the spermatheca of the oviparous female. © 2020 The Author(s) 2020. Oviparous females and males of Drepanosiphum iranicum Hille Ris Lambers are described and illustrated in detail. The poorly known sexuales of D. acerinum (Walker), D. aceris Koch, D. braggii Gillette, D. dixoni HRL, D. oregonensis Granovsky and D. platanoidis (Schrank) are re-described and illustrated in detail. Biometric data for the oviparous females and males are reported and keys for the sexual generation of the species that were studied are provided for the first time. The status of the closely related species D. acerinum and D. caucasicum as well as D. platanoidis and D. iranicum is discussed. The newly recognised species D. latifemorum sp. n., which is closely related to D. oregonensis, is described. Blackman and Eastop's general key to the species that are associated with Acer spp. is modified to include the new species. The most significant diagnostic characters of winged viviparous females of all of the known Drepanosiphum species are also provided and illustrated. © 2016 Elsevier GmbH.},

abstract = {The leafhopper Macrosteles laevis, like other plant sap-feeding hemipterans, lives in obligate symbiotic association with microorganisms. The symbionts are harbored in the cytoplasm of large cells termed bacteriocytes, which are integrated into huge organs termed bacteriomes. Morphological and molecular investigations have revealed that in the bacteriomes of M. laevis, two types of bacteriocytes are present which are as follows: bacteriocytes with bacterium Sulcia and bacteriocytes with Nasuia symbiont. We observed that in bacteriocytes with Sulcia, some cells of this bacterium contain numerous cells of the bacterium Arsenophonus. All types of symbionts are transmitted transovarially between generations. In the mature female, the bacteria Nasuia, bacteria Sulcia, and Sulcia with Arsenophonus inside are released from the bacteriocytes and start to assemble around the terminal oocytes. Next, the bacteria enter the cytoplasm of follicular cells surrounding the posterior pole of the oocyte. After passing through the follicular cells, the symbionts enter the space between the oocyte and follicular epithelium, forming a characteristic “symbiont ball.” © 2015, The Author(s).},

abstract = {The genus Drepanosiphoniella Davatchi, Hille Ris Lambers and Remaudière, 1957 of the subfamily Drepanosiphinae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is revised using comparative morphology of parthenogenetic and sexual generations. On the basis of thorough examination of morphological characters, a full species status of Drepanosiphoniella fugans Remaudière and Leclant, 1972 stat. rev. is given, and supported by using statistical analysis - principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple discriminant analysis (canonical variates analysis). A new species, Drepanosiphoniella remaudièrei sp. n. Wieczorek, is described and figured in detail on the basis of specimens collected in Morocco. Fundatrix, oviparous female and apterous male of Drepanosiphoniella aceris aceris Davatchi, Hille Ris Lambers and Remaudière, 1957 are described and figured. Original keys to the identification of the known species and morphs of the genus Drepanosiphoniella as well as differences with related species are given.
