abstract = {Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 4-chloroindole-3-acetic acid (4-Cl-IAA) were tested at different concentrations and times for their capacity to change the redox activity and medium pH of maize root segments. The dose-response surfaces (dose-response curves as a function of time) plotted for redox activity and changes in medium pH (expressed as ΔpH) had a similar shape for both auxins, but differed significantly at the optimal concentrations. With 4-Cl-IAA, the maximal values of redox activity and medium pH changes were observed at 10-10 M, which was a 100-fold lower concentration than with IAA. Correlations were observed between redox activity and medium pH changes at the optimal concentrations of both IAA and 4-Cl-IAA. The results are discussed herein, taking into account both the concentration of the auxins and the effects produced by them. © 2006 by the University of Wrocław.},

abstract = {The effect of inhibitors of plasma membrane oxidoreductases (quinacrine and dicumarol) and H~-ATPase (dicyclohexylcar- bodiimide and orthovanadate) on ammonium uptake by Pis urn arvense seedlings and the activities of H+ -A TPasc and N ADI1- ferricyanidc oxidorcductase was investigated. The uptake solution contained 50 μM NH4+. In 1 h experiments, quinacrine and dicumarol depressed strongly and irreversibly the rate of NRi+ uptake and markedly inhibited the activity of NADH-ferri- cyanidc oxidoreduciase in the plasma membrane vesicles prepared from root cells. Simultaneously, sodium orthovanadate inhibited the activity of plasma membrane H+-ATPase increased the rate of NHV uptake. Dicyclohexylcarbodiimidc inhibited iT-ATPase activity and increased efflux of NH+ from roots to ambient solution. The results indicate on the lack of direct connection between uptake rate of 50 p.M NH4+ and H+-ATPase activity, and suggest that membrane redox systems play a predominant role in this process.},
